Social Networks – An Anti Social Hobby March 31, 2011

Social Media, Antisocial Hobby

In the beginning there was MySpace (remember that?) and Bebo, then Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and now Quora and others, all places on the web where we connect and share our thoughts with our virtual friends. Some of these networks like LinkedIn I have more for work than because I want to, others like Quora for example I now have because I’m a bit geeky.

Each though requires time, effort and attention to get most from because by it’s very nature you only get out of Social Media what you put in. The idea for this post came this morning when I tweeted ‘I currently have 5 social networks open. Do I have a problem?’. The resounding response was ‘Yes’ and ‘Get a life’ which is a little ironic given those responses were via a Social Network.

You have to wonder if our increasing ‘Social Habit’ is at the cost of relationships with real people, do we prefer our virtual friends to our real ones – and do we prefer to communicate with them via their wall or timeline rather than speaking to them in person?

Will we get to a stage where the human race evolves to have a permanently bent neck and an extra texting finger? You may laugh now but look around as you read this, you’re surrounded by people staring into a screen, typing at lightning speed with two thumbs into the latest must-have iThing updating their statuses.

‘I ate some cheese’.’I just went to the toilet’.’I can’t remember the last time I actually spoke to real person. LOL’

Perhaps there will be a completely new breed of Public Relations Agency who will be able to assist the new bent necked, extra digited human race to actually have relations, in public.

So with a Social Media apocalypse looming, perhaps it’s time to move away from the wall and re-learn the art of simple conversation.

With the correct grammar.

Loving The Modfather March 24, 2011

Had a fab time out with Gale at the Metro Arena Newcastle to see the Modfather himself on the rescheduled gig from December 2010.

The Modfather was supported by The Rifles who had a very tight set.

The Wellermaster was in great form ably supported on lead guitar by Stevie Craddock. A decent variety of tracks with almost the whole of the new album with highlights including Wake up the nation , Trees, Bright star. Classic tracks included Strange Town, Broken Stones, Start, Peacock Suit, Sha La La La, You do something to me (for the couples) and of course the legendary Changing Man.

Well the temperatures have now begun to improve and a lot of snow is now defrosting with the attendant risks of slippy floors.

Bingley is still loving the remaining snow and absolutely loves it.

Little ‘Mumford’ has been promoted and has now reached the dizzy heights of stage 2 of the puppy foundation.

First week – well embarrasingly he has forgotten everything the turnip! So back to basics and keep on trying with the little blighter.

Well the cute little blighter is now the sum total of 15 weeks old and remains cute as a button. However he also has the intelligence and guile of a box of monkeys!

Recent events to confirm his intelligence and bonkers – ness as follows:
1. Chasing a frog around trying to figure out what he would do to it if he managed to catch it!
2. The Dummy – an event locked firmly into family hilarity from forever onwards.
3. His love of cherry tomatoes and fresh pears – say no more about the healthy dog.

Well well, if you had asked me 6 weeks ago if we would have a dog or a dog who would so take over our lives I would have laughed out loud before telling you what I thought.

We welcomed Mr Mumford ‘Bingley’ into our life on Saturday in early August. After looking around for the sum total of four days and a previous puppy went to someone else we journeyed up to Washington to look at the little chap. The home was obviously ‘lived in’ hoever it was obvious that the little man was loved along with his remaining two siblings and his mummy was there and looked a super friendly dog.

So we made our choice and we then underwent the somewhat arduous task of naming the little blighter. Alfie – nope, Buster – nope, Chalmondley – nope. Ahh says Gale what about Bingley – Ta Dah and a new family member was decided. Then it was the visit to Pets at Home for all his things – Crate – check, blanket – check, dry and timned food – check, treats – check, cuddly toy (ahhhh) – check and we were prepared.

Joss was coming down and so we collected Joss and journeyed down to pick him up – what a cute little blighter. See the pictures and enjoy.
