Social Networks – An Anti Social Hobby March 31, 2011

Social Media, Antisocial Hobby

In the beginning there was MySpace (remember that?) and Bebo, then Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and now Quora and others, all places on the web where we connect and share our thoughts with our virtual friends. Some of these networks like LinkedIn I have more for work than because I want to, others like Quora for example I now have because I’m a bit geeky.

Each though requires time, effort and attention to get most from because by it’s very nature you only get out of Social Media what you put in. The idea for this post came this morning when I tweeted ‘I currently have 5 social networks open. Do I have a problem?’. The resounding response was ‘Yes’ and ‘Get a life’ which is a little ironic given those responses were via a Social Network.

You have to wonder if our increasing ‘Social Habit’ is at the cost of relationships with real people, do we prefer our virtual friends to our real ones – and do we prefer to communicate with them via their wall or timeline rather than speaking to them in person?

Will we get to a stage where the human race evolves to have a permanently bent neck and an extra texting finger? You may laugh now but look around as you read this, you’re surrounded by people staring into a screen, typing at lightning speed with two thumbs into the latest must-have iThing updating their statuses.

‘I ate some cheese’.’I just went to the toilet’.’I can’t remember the last time I actually spoke to real person. LOL’

Perhaps there will be a completely new breed of Public Relations Agency who will be able to assist the new bent necked, extra digited human race to actually have relations, in public.

So with a Social Media apocalypse looming, perhaps it’s time to move away from the wall and re-learn the art of simple conversation.

With the correct grammar.

Would the last person in Myspace please turn iff the lighrs? March 8, 2011

It’s not often that Myspace friend requests make me laugh, cry or even gasp with shock, especially as Myspace now resembles a derelict building full of spammers and teen-bothering nonces. The last friend request to genuinely disturb me was this guy who added me as a friend, and when I accepted, chose to add to the comments section of my page video clips of himself…shall we say…manipulating his genitals with a view to achieving orgasm? Since then I’ve had to screen all incoming comments and approve them on arrival, like a sort of Passport Control for a soon to be abandoned country.

Yesterday I received yet another invite from some random band asking to be friends on Myspace, and as Myspace now allows the sender to add a line of dialogue to their friend request, the band sent me this as their opening gambit:

“Hi Mike, we are (band name witheld) and we’d like you to be our friend on here and check out our music. We’re very much along the same lines as Coldplay and Snow Patrol, hope you enjoy our page”.

I thought to myself Yes! This band sounds right up my alley! I’m just the sort of person a Coldplay/Snow Patrol type of band is aimed at:

I’m early to mid forties
I wear combat trousers at the weekend ’cause it makes a change from the shirt and tie
I bought the last Manics albumand The Best Of Robbie ‘Wobbly Head’ Williams for my wife at crimbo.
I lap up bland-as-chalk-dust crap on the telly like Miss Marple, Diagnosis Murder and Outnumbered.
My favourite comedian is Lee Evans (God he really is the new Norman Wisdom isn’t he?).
I drive a Nissan Note company car and have aspirations of owning a ******* jeep.

Needless to say I immediately approved this band’s request and placed them at the top of my friends list for all to see. But it’s irrelevant where I placed this fine example of middle-class coffee-table alt-rock ********, because by the look of things Myspace has literally just a few months left to run.

Favourite apps of the week February 6, 2011

Well it has been an exciting first week with my new iPhone 4. Plenty to try and my face apps of the first week are:

1. Plants vs Zombies
without doubt my favourite game and a great learning curve with great graphics and gameplay. Supremely addictive!

2. Facebook
It”s integration is seamless and more tied in and intuitive than the BB version. No problems with duplicate FB contacts either so win win.

3. iOS
None of the repeated duplicated contacts from Google that plagued my contact integration on BB os5. That in itself is worth the price of buying into Apple.

More next week and maybe a final Twitter client (fingers crossed).

Had my iPhone 4 for almost a week and not certain which Twitter app I will be using as my default app. Have looked at the following:

Tweedeck – Buggy and forever throwing me out of app. Despite Tweetdeck’s claims their Facebook integration is appalling and is forever logging you out and asking to log in when you are already in frustratingly bug ridden.

Twitter – this looks good but will have to check functionality.

Ubertwitter – Nowhere near as good as the blackberry version and too many forced closures – maybe an option if try can sort functionality.

Seismic – Too busy developing for android and blackberry shame.

Will try – Echofon and report back

Oh for the simplicity integration and functionality of Blaq on the BB.

Choices Choices and not very bloody clear………. November 23, 2010

Well, well well it’s that time of the year again – mobile contract renewal!!!!

To be frank I am truly at a loss with the choices largely being between the least worst options. I have largely enjoyed my year with the BB 9700 but lately I have become increasingly frustrated by it’s lack of scope and limted functionality in certain areas. So it is time for a change and the choices are largely between another BB, apple’s ios or android. I would have liked to make Nokia and Symbian a choice but as will be outlined below it really is a none starter.

Choices:
Blackberry Torch 9800
This is the one that most BB users wanted to work but it is oh so well – dull. It is heavy, poorly designed and compared to the opposition is about circa 2007. The screen resolution screams unambition and make do. So regretfully not for me.

Blackberry Bold 9780
An upgrade to camera, os6 and more ram a ram busting 512mb – jeesus. It is typical of RIM that a minor incremental upgrade is all they can manage and with the black surround it even for a premium device looks er well cheap. A possibility but overall a poor second – but streets ahead of the oh so dull Torch.

Samsung Galaxy S
Wifey’s handset so a none starter otherwise we will have matching sweaters and basin haircuts next. But a luscious looking device with that gorgeous Super Amoled screen but a little occasional lag spoils it for me and the touchwiz not as great. Plus the Samsung Kies pc software is absolutely bug ridden and appaling and secondary their support for devices is notoriously poor. Having said that they are currently updating to 2.2 froyo so positives abound.

HTC Desire HD
Should be a killer device with great screen, 2.2 froyo and 8mp camera but it just falls short. The battery a 1250ma is a shocking design choice for that lush 4.3“ screen. It nbarely lasts a day and with my useage is likely to result in me ‘losing’ it for a speedy change. A missed ipportunity and the build quality suggests that HTC may have peaked slightly.

HTC Desire Z
Great and a great choicve except for the flimsy hinge on the z slider. Otherwise this would have been the one!

HTC HD7
The dark horse. On O2 comes with 16gb on board and running the Windows Phone 7 os. However as an early android adopter – once bitten twice shy and the os may be a better choive at version 2.0. But it looks the biz and with updates may be a future choice in a years time. On the os it is just great and very touch friendly and to be honest looks very fresh.

Apple iphone 4
The dark side – locked in and in the apple softosphere. However functionality wise and apps it cannot be beaten and it does scream ‘premium product’ and aside from the antenna issue which only affects some handsets it apparently very reliable. On a plus point it is available on Tesco’s 12 month deal with 1gb data and this effectively is provided by O2.

So decisions, decisions……… What is a guy to do?
